A SDC (Société de Développement Commercial) is a non-profit organization that promotes the economic development of an area. As of 2009, there are 14 SDCs in Montréal. Our goal is to make Monkland the 15th SDC by 2010.
With other neighbourhoods vying for your customer’s attention (St-Laurent Blvd, Crescent Street, Old Montreal, Quartier Latin) it’s more important than ever to play up our strengths as a community. Together we can do more for our community and businesses than each on our own. Strength in numbers!
Since 2008, the contribution value is calculated according to the contribution unit's property value in proportion to the space occupied by a given business establishment.
Membership is calculated according to the unit’s property value. Smaller businesses pay smaller amounts, while merchants who are on street level pay more than those who’s business or office are on a sub-level or second floor for example.
The operating budget of each SDC is adopted by its members at a general meeting. The borough council must then approve this budget. The money will be divided by the priorities set forth by the MMA members. A bare minimum will be reserved for administrative and operational expenses.
Us, of course! The MMA is here to provide an effective voice for all business and merchants in the Monkland Village. Be heard! Send us an email, leave us a phone message or join us at our next committee meeting… We’re listening.
The MMA is currently working with the City of Montreal to create the SDC Monkland. Over a year in the making, several meetings and dozens of emails have been exchanged in an effort to create our very own merchant organization. The City is behind us, now it’s time for the Monkland merchants to join forces, sign up and create a brighter future for all business owners on the street.
